Martin Salisbury revisits a favourite illustration from Humbert, Mr Firkin and the Lord Mayor of London
Humbert tells the story of a horse that pulls a rag and bone cart and ends up pulling the coach at the Lord Mayor’s show. This illustration is a particular favourite. Here, Humbert is feeling terrible and stays awake all night thinking how unfair life is. In the picture you can see a tiny little window where Humbert is, in a huge vista of London at night. I could look at this illustration and this book endlessly to be honest. I just think it’s gorgeous.
Marin Salisbury is professor of illustration at Cambridge School of Art at Anglia Ruskin University.
Humbert, Mr Firkin and the Lord Mayor of London was first published in 1965.
